Publicado en 1989 por Craft Recordings/Universal Music «Pretty Hate Machine» es el título del álbum debut de la formación liderada por Trent Reznor Nine Inch Nails. Diferentes productores como Flood, Keith LeBlanc o John Fryer apoyaron la arriesgada apuesta de Reznor, con ésa mezcla de rock industrial/electrónico y synth/pop y el disco consiguió el certificado de triple platino por sus ventas, gracias a singles como «Head Like a Hole», «Sin» o «Down In It».
